On Monday, September 17th, the Celina Board of Trustees unanimously approved plans on the $24.5 million Celina ISD Multipurpose Athletic Complex, which broke ground in October 2018 and is scheduled for completion in August. Celina ISD has partnered with Claycomb Associates and NorthStar Builders to oversee the project.
In 2008, a bond in the amount of $34.3 million was passed as part of a 5-year plan to provide for the predicted growth in the school district. The proposal split the bond with 63% for academic purposes and the remaining 27% for athletic upgrades. The passed by a wide margin, but when the economy slowed, the academic and athletic projects were placed on hold. In 2016, the district was able to begin using the funds, including the construction of O’Dell Elementary and a new academic wing for Celina High School. Money was also spent on technology upgrades at each campus.
With the economy becoming stronger, the district has now been able to cash in the remaining bond money to be used for the athletic side of the proposed 2008 Bond. The new Celina ISD Multipurpose Athletic Complex includes much needed home/visitor parking, as well as seating to accommodate 6500, with the ability to increase capacity to 10,000 when necessary. It will also include an indoor multipurpose facility, weight rooms, dining area, coaching offices, dressing rooms, and a state of the art film room with built in seating capabilities. Future projects will include tennis courts, baseball and softball competition fields that will be built in close proximity to the new complex.
On the Development project update page of Celina Independent School District’s website, it was reported that in November the demolition was completed, and that pier drilling and rough grading were on-going. In December, the piers were completed while the rough grading continues, as well as on-going efforts for grade beams, under slab plumbing & electrical rough-ins, and site utilities. The next efforts we should see as we move forward will be the structural steel delivery and erection, as well as the slab installation. It’s such an exciting time to be a Bobcat!!
